How to diagnose a Mercedes cold starting problem

The car starts for a second in the morning then craps out

A typical Mercedes cold starting problem. When cranking your engine in the morning push your foot up and down on the pedal. When you hear the engine turning over push your foot about halfway down on the pedal. Rev the engine at high RPM's for about ten seconds. Release your foot and your engine will be revving at a smooth idle. Sometimes the idle will sound smooth, and you put the car in drive, or reverse, and it just craps out. The car wasn't warmed up enough yet. Start it again, and rev the engine for a higher duration until the car is warm. Go Green! Save Gas with the Toyota Prius Hybrid

The car just won't start in the morning

The main culprit is bad glow plugs. Glow plugs are often neglected. A lot of times the glow plugs won't be good even when the coil light comes on inside the car. They can be checked with an ohmmeter. If you need new glowplugs, and want a really good deal, you can Save as much as 75% on all MERCEDES Parts and Accessories at Auto Parts Warehouse They carry a lot of hard to find diesel parts. If your in a real desperate situation you can use starter fluid to start the car. Remove the donut looking lid on the left side of the engine. On the 85 Diesels it's smaller, and closer to the hood latch. Be very careful using starter fluid. It is highly flammable.. When you remove the lid you'll see the air filter. Spray the starter fluid down the air intake. Then, try cranking the engine. If the car starts it will make a strange noise, and some smoke will fly out of the exhaust. Using starter fluid is not recommended because it can damage the engine. A bad battery will not have the cranking power to start the car. An Optima battery is a good investment. It is a long lasting battery with no electrolyte. If its really cold out try blending some Diesel fuel with your Vegetable Oil. It helps thin out the viscosity of the oil.

Car won't start and the battery is fine

Sometimes your battery is fine, and you turn the key and nothing. Sometimes the neutral safety switch goes bad. The neutral safety switch makes it so that you can only start the car when its in park. When it goes bad you get the opposite. It wont start in park but it will start in neutral. If the battery is fine and you turn the key and get nothing, try starting it in neutral. Its very likely the engine will crank and you have a bad neutral safety switch!!!!
